Ernest Edward Cockerton was born was born in Gazeley in 1870 (Newmarket Q3-1870 3B:518), baptised in Gazeley (All Saints) on 9th April 1871, son of Frederick William and Ann COCKERTON (née GOODCHILD).

1871 census...Aged 8 months, he was at Gazeley Street, Gazeley with his father William COCKERTON [37] farm labourer; his mother Ann [27] and brother Arthur [1]. All were born in Gazeley.

1881 census...Aged 10, he was in Gazeley with his widowed mother, brother Arthur F and sisters Elizabeth C.{8] and Louisa E. [7] both born in Gazeley. His father had died in Q1-1881.

1891 census...The only Ernest Cockerton found in this census is Newmarket born aged 32, a footman at 16 Bolton Street, St George's Square, London.
His mother and sister Louisa were in Gazeley (Laundresses)

1901 census...Aged 30, a carrier/carter, he was in The Street Gazeley with his mother.

1911 census...Aged 40, he was a farm labourer, at The Street Gazeley, single, living alone.
His mother was at Chapel Road, Bradfield St.George with her grandson Harold Basil [15] born Gazeley (supported by relatives)


He enlisted in London, resident in Bradfield St George, Suffolk (presumably his mother's house).
Whilst in Egypt, the regiment was dismounted in August 1915 for service in the Gallipoli Campaign. It left a squadron headquarters and two troops (about 100 officers and men) in Egypt to look after the horses.
As his Army records have not been found it is not known if he was wounded or suffered an illness that led to him coming back to UK.
He died in Fulham, and was brought back to Gazeley for burial.
